Cong. Rangel Supports Coalition

Calling on the City to Honestly Share its Intentions on Development

[article taken from Cong. Charles Rangel's website and newsletter, The Rangel Bulletin]

As Mayor Bloomberg looks to develop and rezone many parts of the City and of upper Manhattan, Congressman Rangel called on City Planning Chair Amanda Burden to host a borough-wide meeting outlining the City's intentions. "I believe," Congressman Rangel wrote, "it would be beneficial to all parties involved in the process if you hosted a borough-wide meeting outlining your plans for the island." "Too many times," he continued, "my constituents have learned about development plans too late in the process and have not had a chance to have a say in the process."

The letter was prompted by the large number of development projects and rezoning efforts in the 15th Congressional District. One of the areas in question is Park West Village, an area on the Upper West Side, which is being threatened by massive development that may change the character of the neighborhood. After meeting with a coalition of concerned residents, Congressman Rangel reiterated his support for preserving the community and including tenants in the planning process.
